“NEXT time, someone may not be so lucky.”

These are the words of Patricia Dennis, whose car was struck by a bottle full of liquid hurled by a teenager from the Brunel Road bridge over the A339 on Friday last week.

Mrs Dennis, of Abbey Road, Popley, was driving home along the A339 northbound on Ringway West at around 4.10pm when she noticed three teenagers on the bridge.

She saw one of the boys launch a plastic bottle down towards the carriageway below which struck the windscreen of Mrs Dennis’ car, causing no significant damage but leaving the driver shaken up and angry.

She said: “You hear these stories of people throwing objects off bridges, so when I saw the three of them, I instinctively looked up.

“I saw the bottle coming towards me and there was nothing I could do, I had a lorry next to me so I couldn’t swerve, so I had to emergency brake.

“The noise was just horrendous.

“I was really shaken up and I couldn’t really take in what happened until I got home.”

Mrs Dennis reported the incident to the police as well as getting in touch with headteachers of schools, asking them to tell students of the potential catastrophic consequences these actions could cause.

She added: “For these kids it was a bit of bravado to look cool in front of their friends. But I was very lucky, next time someone may not be so lucky, and it could be a glass bottle, or a brick.

“These children need to know the full extent of the consequences of their actions.”

Hampshire Constabulary confirmed they were called to the incident and an investigation has been filed pending any further information coming to light.

A spokesman for Hampshire Constabulary said: “We would like to take this opportunity to remind people that dropping or throwing items from bridges on to passing traffic can have serious or even fatal consequences.”
