A POPULAR green space in Basingstoke has been given Local Nature Reserve (LNR) status.

Following a public consultation, and with the support of Natural England, Beggarwood Park has been given LNR status by Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council (BDBC).

The neighbourhood park, between Beggarwood and Hatch Warren, has proved popular with families, walkers and cyclists since it was established in the late 1990s.

Already a designated site of importance for nature conservation, Beggarwood Park is rich with ancient woodlands, chalk grasslands and wildlife including dormice, butterflies and a variety of birds.

The reason the borough council decided to declare the site as a LNR is to protect and enhance this natural environment.

In addition to the natural beauty of the area, community facilities in the park include garden allotments, children’s play and kickabout areas, a BMX cycle track, maze and gym equipment.

There are also pedestrian and cycle links and a community centre is set to open later this year.

BDBC cabinet member for planning and infrastructure at the borough Cllr Mark Ruffell was delighted with the award of the status.

He said: “Beggarwood Park is enjoyed by many of us who visit it for recreation and relaxation.

“It contains important habitats and species.

“The council is committed to the flourishing of Beggarwood Park by designating it a Local Nature Reserve and will continue working with the local community to strengthen the natural biodiversity within the Park whilst keep the park accessible for all.

“I look forward to watching Beggarwood Park flourish under its new status.”

The LNR boundary which has been drawn up excludes parts of the park which are currently occupied by the community centre, play areas and allotments.
