PLANS to build five new properties in Vyne Road have been met with objections from residents, who say the space is “too small” for development.

A piece of unoccupied land to the east of Great Western Cottages, in Vyne Road, is the proposed site for the five terraced home development.

Flowerkittle Architects is acting as agents for the plans, which have been submitted to Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council (BDBC),in what the developers call a “rare opportunity” to utilise a small piece of land.

However, the proposal has not been met with support from all, as the Basingstoke Heritage Society has objected to the plans, saying if built it would cause a safety issue for pedestrians.

Christopher Comer, from the society, said: “It should be noted that there is no provision for a separate pedestrian footpath but there will be an increase in traffic up the narrow access road.

“Moreover the site from Great Western Railway Cottages provides a green corridor which is used by pedestrians from west to east along Doswell Way which is a significant green asset in the Southview area. Thus there is a safety issue given this footfall and increase in vehicle movements.”

Teela Blacklaws, of Norden Close added; “This proposal is not suitable for that small space. The drive up to the cottages is used as a access for disability and prams and this will be compromised by the additional needs of five dwellings.

“Parking in the area is already stretched and 10 additional cars will not be able to be accommodated.”

In the proposed plans, Flowerkittle Architects said; “The scheme offers a rare opportunity for new terraced housing within a very central location, which is appropriate and needed.”

The plan is due to be decided on by September 1. To comment, go to planning.basingstoke.gov.uk/ online-applications and search using the code 17/01994/FUL.
