BASINGSTOKE is at the ‘forefront’ of the digital world with the unveiling last week of a ‘pioneering’ new piece of technology.

The only 5G test bed in the UK, available to start-up and smaller businesses, was unveiled on Wednesday, July 19 at the Ark Conference Centre.

5G technology is set to revolutionise internet connectivity, improving speed and reliability of digital connections and transforming the way we use mobile technology and creating new opportunities that will change lives.

Located at the Innovation Centre in Basing View, the test bed is set to put Basingstoke at the forefront of this revolution, enabling businesses and entrepreneurs to get a head start on the latest advance in mobile communications.

The ‘anytime, anywhere’ connectivity has been brought to the town thanks to Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council (BDBC) joining forces with the University of Surrey’s 5G Innovation Centre.

Councillor Hannah Golding, BDBC cabinet member for digital innovation and inclusion, said: “The cutting-edge 5G mobile network test bed at Basing View puts Basingstoke at the heart of pioneering mobile technology.

“The council is delighted to lend its support to the 5G Innovation Centre and facilitate the use of the 5G test bed by local digital entrepreneurs and growing businesses, which will enable them to develop mobile applications which are fit for the future.

“We are truly at the forefront of emerging technology in mobile communications.”

The test bed was built with investment from the Enterprise M3 growth fund, expertise from University of Surrey’s 5G Innovation Centre and support from BDBC, SETsquared, and high-tech start-up Gematech.

Adrian Braine, entrepreneur-in-residence at the 5G Step Out in Basingstoke, said: “The new 5G test bed at Basingstoke’s Innovation Centre will bring a wealth of possibilities for digital start-ups and change our world like never before.

“Having access to a worldleading facility such as this right on their doorstep will allow businesses to grow, develop new products and explore the next generation of mobile.”
