JUSTIN Rose starts the final round of The Open Championship at Royal Birkdale today, 15 shots behind overnight leader Jordan Spieth.

The former Robert May’s pupil was hoping to emulate the form he showed on his first visit to the course as a teenager back in 1998, when he finished tied fourth.

Unfortunately, it was not to be for the Olympic champion, even though he started well with two birdies in his opening three holes on day one.

His first round then became a real battle, as he finished with a one over 71 after hitting four birdies and five bogeys.

Day two was even worse, as Rose just made the cut after carding a four over 74.

Yesterday, the Englishman had his best round to date, as he posted a one under 69, thanks to birdies at holes eight, 15 and 16, with dropped shots at the first and ninth.

It left him tied 52nd going into the final round, which he starts at 10.10am today.
