AN OLD school site could be transformed into homes following a planning application being submitted to the borough council.

The King’s School site, in Bramblys Close, Sarum Hill could be demolished and replaced by 16 new properties, made up of one, two and three-story houses under proposals put forward to Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council (BDBC).

Equity Real Estate Developments has submitted the plans to the borough council stating the site would be ideal for homes as it is “well connected with a wide range of amenities nearby.”

In the application, a statement from the developer reads: “The existing site at The Former King’s School on Bramblys Close in Basingstoke is currently comprised of a collection of outdated school buildings.

“The school buildings are situated centrally on the site and comprise a single-storey ‘Nissen Hut’-style building of prefabricated concrete cladding under an asphalt felt roofing linked to a two-storey brick built structure with corrugated asbestos roof sheeting.”

The statement adds: “The site itself is in use as an infant school until the end of the 2016/17 academic year when it will be permanently closed.”

As reported in The Gazette last year, the school will be closed following “increasing financial pressure” meaning it became unsustainable to keep open.

The plans state that the proposed new buildings would be in keeping with the area, however, some residents have already written to BDBC disagree.

Sara Mills said: “I am writing this to say I don’t believe that building 16 dwellings in Bramblys Close is keeping up with the area.

“I really don’t believe this has been thought through properly.

“I understand that people need somewhere to live but building there is definitely not keeping up with the area.”

Equity Real Estate Developments in its planning statement, added: “We propose to demolish the existing buildings on site; these buildings are of little to no architectural value. Given the proximity of the site to the town centre of Basingstoke, the site makes an excellent candidate for conversion to high quality new build residential dwelling.”

The application is due to be decided on by September 25.
