A PUB, dental surgery, care home, retirement homes and a care facility could soon be coming to Beggarwood.

A planning application has been submitted to build a care home, 42 retirement homes, a pub and a dental surgery on ‘The Island’ site in Beggarwood Lane, bordering the A30 Winchester Road.

The application for the currently vacant site includes two facilities for care - a 70-bed care home and a 28-bed specialist care facility.

The former would be for older people in an assisted-living environment while the latter would be for people with complex care needs, including those who may be suffering from severe dementia, have suffered a stroke or may be suffering from brain injuries.

The pub is proposed to be run by the Hall and Woodhouse chain which already runs an array of pubs in and around Basingstoke including the Portsmouth Arms, the Queen College Arms and the Coach and Horses.

A previous application to build a pub on the site was withdrawn in 2006, the move believed to have been made due to commercial reasons.

A planning statement submitted by the developer Grainger Plc reads: “The proposed mixuse development will provide essential facilities and services to both the existing residents of Beggarwood and the wider area.

“The provision of a dental surgery and a public house will expand the level of services and facilities on offer to residents of Beggarwood and adjoining areas, and help alleviate some of the pressure placed on existing services.

“The provision of a care home facility, a separate specialist care home, and retirement apartments designed for retirees and downsizers, will provide for the future needs of the community.”

The site would have access both from Beggarwood Lane and Shortwood Copse Lane with the care home and care facility located to the south-west of the site and the pub on the northern tip of the land.

The application is due to be decided on by Tuesday, October 10.

The plan has already been called in by councillor Terri Reid to go before BDBC’s development committee for a decision.
