VANDALS smashed stained-glass windows and caused significant damage to a Basingstoke church during a break-in.

Police have reported that access was gained to St Leonard's Church in Church Lane, Cliddesden, when the vandals caused considerable damage the church safe forcing it open and stealing items of church property from within, as well as breaking two stained-glass windows.

Officers are appeal for witnesses who saw a blue car, possibly the size of a Vauxhall Astra, which was seen parked outside the church, and are looking to talk to a who was sat on the wall facing towards the road with blond hair wearing a white top and sun glasses. On Monday, June 19 around 3.45pm.

It is believed the incident took place sometime between 3pm on June 19 and 11am on June 20.

PC Andrew Reid said: “I ask if anyone who was in the area saw anything including this car or woman, please give me a call if only to eliminate from our enquiries.

“This is an unusual type of crime within church premises, however the damage and destruction caused is beyond belief and will cost thousands to repair.

“If you can help please give me a call, no matter how much you think it may be relevant any information is appreciated.”
