NOW 23 years old, the Yorkshireborn musician Ryan Watkins was 18 when he joined Brighouse and Rastrick Brass Band – regarded by many as the best and most consistent “public subscription band” in the world.

And although he’s always been in love with his instrument, it’s certainly something that makes the former Royal Northern College of Music student stand out.

“Nah, I never had those sort of Tommy Dorsey posters on my wall,” Ryan told The Gazette.

“But I mean growing up all the other teenagers in like Year 8 or 9 would be listening to the DJs, drinking their cider on a Friday night, whilst I was going to brass band practice.

“I remember just being so excited though that at the time there were these big bands like Black Dyke coming to my hometown, so I always wanted to do this.”

What’s most entertaining about Brighouse and Rastrick Brass Band – who were formed in West Yorkshire in 1881 – is their instinctive ability to recreate some of the greatest anthems, hymns and classical movement.

Described by Ryan as “masters of the brass”, he was in awe of the group before being invited to perform with them.

And it’s been quite a journey for the youngster.

“I started out in Year 4 at about eight years old and they were handing out all these instruments and I got given the trombone,” Ryan said.

“I struggled to get a sound out at first but it was just amazing when I did.

“Since joining you have to be proving your worth all the time. It’s been tough but this is the best band going.”

Brighouse and Rastrick Brass Band head to The Anvil on Saturday June 17.
