HOOK and Newnham Basics I were disappointed after losing away to Bournemouth I by 23 runs in last Saturday’s Southern League Division One game.

A delayed start meant that that there were only 46 overs for each side, and the struggling Hook couldn’t catch up to Bournemouth’s lead in time.

The home side won the toss and elected to bat, chalking up 221 for five over their time at the crease.

Bournemouth’s starting batsman Ben Bridgen notched up 70 runs in 80 balls, and the runs kept coming for the home side.

Hook then stepped up to compete, managing to get 198 runs in their 46 overs. The away side got off to a slow start with Jack Robson putting in 10 runs before being caught, and Richard Willcock managing two runs in eight balls, ending his short time at the wicket with a lbw. Ben Thane (19) was the next to have a lbw, followed by captain Matt Love who went out only taking six runs.

Jordan Hobday was next, taking 18 runs, who was then followed by Josh Buckingham, who put in one of the better Hook performances, taking 33 runs and smacking it over the boundary twice. Rhodes Franklin unfortunately went out in one over, only taking three runs before going out.

Matthew Buckingham was the best performing batter that Hook fielded, getting 55 runs in 51 balls, sending the ball flying for six four times. The ninth wicket fell with Rupert Armstrong at the crease, taking nine runs in 24 balls.

Aniket Divecha (20) and Kevin Poulter (2) finished batting 23 runs short in the 46 overs afforded by the delayed start.

Hook’s next game is at home to Tichbourne Park.
