A TEAM of midwives from Basingstoke hospital and Winchester hospital have organised a family funday in order to raise money for a life-saving trip to Uganda.

They are raising money to volunteer their services in Hoima, Uganda in October this year, where they will be aiming to improve the maternal and child health of those in Hoima.

The combined group of Basingstoke and Winchester midwives and operation department practitioners will be volunteering at the Hoima Regional Referral Hospital in Uganda again, having volunteered there before.

Jade Kneller, a midwife at Basingstoke hospital and organiser of the event and trip, said: “During our two week stay in Uganda we aim to help to improve maternity and services within the operating theatre by providing training in the hope it can help to reduce mortality rates.

“Unfortunately, in Uganda, 440 women per 100,000 live births die annually from pregnancy related conditions, compared to the UK where the number is a lot smaller with only seven women dying per 100,000 births.

“The difference in Uganda is that these deaths can all be avoided with the correct training. Our visit will help to make these clinical changes in order to improve the standard of care being provided.”

The fun day will be taking place on May 20 at Velmore Community Centre in Chandler’s Ford from 11am-2pm. Entry is £1 for adults, and 50p for children, with stalls and events being available throughout the day, including a raffle, family orientated games with prizes, and a bouncy castle in addition to other fair events.

They aim to raise as much as possible to cover the costs of getting there.
