ANGRY residents have claimed a new housing development near Basingstoke hospital will lead to more congestion and less access to the hospital.

As previously reported in The Gazette, a piece of land off the A340 known as the Aldermaston Road Triangle, has been sold to developer Bovis Homes, after recently been granted planning permission for housing development.

The site will be home to 90 new builds, with 62 of the dwelling set to be houses and 28 will be flats.

Construction on site should begin in the coming months.

However, the news of the development has been met with anger from residents who believe the new homes will just add to the already high level of congestion around the hospital.

On The Gazette’s Facebook page several residents aired their concerns surrounding the development.

Michelle Godfrey said: “Adding more congestion to the hospital, I wouldn’t want to hear those sirens every night either. Totally ruined what was a pleasant view for in-patients.”

Sara Westwood added: “Big error in judgement for planning, more congestion, more pollution, restricts options on giving the hospital more parking and expansion, more accidents on what has always been a dangerous road.”

As part of the development scheme, Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council transferred a piece of land from the Triangle site to Hampshire County Council, to help facilitate local highway improvements on the A340.

Cabinet member for property and development Cllr John Izett said: “We are committed to developing urgently needed new affordable housing, which will be prioritised for local households in need. There are currently more than 3,000 households on the rented housing register and around 1,500 looking for low cost home ownership. This scheme is a good example of the council using surplus land to enable to building.”
