SAINTS legend Matt Le Tissier was in Basingstoke’s Waterstones in Festival Place to sign copies of Match to the New Millennium on Tuesday afternoon.

This is a lovely book which features Southampton’s 100 most memorable matches from 2001-2016.

Game number one in the book is the first game at St Mary’s and one that Le Tissier played in before his retirement.

Published on the 15th anniversary of the opening of St Mary’s on11 August 2016.

Also included is the FA Cup Final loss to Arsenal in 2003 and the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy Final in 2010.

Publishers of the book Hagiology are very grateful to the Saints legend in given in his time for them and they class as their patron saint.

Le Tissier still gets along to as many games as he can and is looking forward to what should be another memorable one, when Saints take on Hapoel Be’Er Shieva in their final group game in the Europa League this evening.

The soccer pundit on Sky every Saturday Le Tissier said: “I really hope they win and I think they can do being at home.

“It would. be great for the club to reach the next stage of the competition.

"It also means there will be more games on Sundays which I can watch and we have not won on a Saturday this year so for that another good reason I hope they win.”

The book reviews many great games at St Mary’s and the new ground Le Tissier feels was instrumental in bringing Markus Liebherr to the club, whose money then help them climb back to the top flight.

Le Tissier said : “At first when we move to the new ground, it was like two steps forward and three back, but I am sure the stadium had a lot to do with Marcus joining the club. It was certainly a more attractive venue than the old Dell.

“His investment helped the club to get where it is today and the way they have sustained their position in the Premier League.”

While the Saints legend is a soccer pundit commenting on the top tier of the game, he does not forget his roots and the island of his birth Guernsey.

The side are now in Ryman League South and Le Tissier said: “I think not enough is done for grassroots football, there are a lot of volunteers who work tirelessly to keep clubs going."

He is also pleased to see the progress of one of his former teams Eastleigh and said: “I don’t recognise the place now from when I played there in the Wessex League. it would be great for Hampshire to have another league side and of course Aldershot are also in the National league.”

l Match of the New Millennium is published by Hagiology Publishing and is priced at £18.99.

It is a real must for any Saints fans and also a good read for any football fans.
