FOOTAGE captured by a man in Whitchurch shows the “dangerous” traffic problems when drivers leave Tesco in Winchester Road if a delivery truck is parked up.

Phil Cooper, of Winchester Road, filmed drivers attempting to leave Tesco Express when a delivery van was parked up on the road outside it.

Tesco had promised to ensure an employee of the supermarket would help drivers leave the car park to ensure they could rejoin the road safely.

However, Mr Cooper captured a video of a car struggling to see around the large van with 20 cars driving past the vehicle as he tried to pull away.

“It’s incredibly dangerous for drivers,” Mr Cooper, 70, said.

“The stupid thing is if they parked further down the road between Test Road and the junction, there would be a little more visibility and allow people leaving the car park to do so safely.

“At the moment there is just no way to see around the delivery trucks.

Tesco promised they would make sure it was safe but this could cause an accident and have a serious impact on the lives of people if an accident happened.”

He added: “Anybody passing the vehicle is in danger.”

At present, Tesco delivery drivers park on the road which obscures the vision of drivers leaving the shop when they join up with Winchester Road.

Mr Cooper hopes sharing his footage will highlight the issue with Tesco, Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council and other drivers unaware of the dangers of leaving the car park when trucks are present.

A spokesman for Tesco said: “We’re always conscious of being a good neighbour so we’ve arranged for extra colleagues to unload deliveries and help the traffic flow outside our Winchester Street Express store.”
