A MAN has been flown to hospital with serious life threatening injuries after being knocked from a bridge in Basingstoke.

The male believed to be in his mid 30s was struck by a vehicle along the Worting Road, which goes over the A340, when the car swerved to avoid a collision with another vehicle.

Police were called to the scene at 9.34am when a collision between a red Vauxhall Astra and a silver Vauxhall Vectra caused the driver of the Astra to swerve and hit the pedestrian.

As a result the man fell off to bridge onto the southbound carriageway of Ringway West where he was struck by another vehicle.

Paramedics arrived on the scene at around 9.45am and the man was taken to Southampton General Hospital by air ambulance.

Road closures are in place on Ringway West southbound from the Thorneycroft Road roundabout, and Worting Road is closed at the Sandys Road roundabout.

Further closures are in place at the Morrisons roundabout and the slip-road where the northbound carriageway of Ringway West joins Worting Road.
The northbound carriageway of Ringway West is open, but is heavily congested and traffic is currently at a standstill.

South Central Ambulance staff also treated the female driver of one of the vehicles for shock, but it is believed both drivers are uninjured at this time.

Motorist are advised to seek alternative routes while both the Ringway West of the A340 and Worting Road remain closed.

Hampshire Constabulary would like to thank members of the public for their patience while the incident is being dealt with.
