A WINDOW of a diner was smashed as three people attempted to break into an eatery in Kingsclere.

The suspects, who were wearing dark clothing, were seen to smash a side window of Nelson’s Diner, in Newbury Road, off the A339.

Police were unable to confirm if the incident had been seen by an eyewitness or caught on CCTV.

The incident took place between 1.04am and 1.12am yesterday, when the culprits attempted to force open the diner’s side door to gain access after breaking the window.

After they were unable to gain access to the restaurant the three people left the scene in a Subaru Impreza estate car.

Nothing was taken from the eatery.

Investigating officer PC Stuart Bond said: “I’d like to hear from anyone who may have been passing or in the area at the time that may have seen a Subaru Impreza estate vehicle, or who may have captured any images of it on a dash cam.

“This is a busy stretch of road throughout the night and I would encourage passing motorists or customer of the nearby petrol station to contact the police should they see any suspicious activity at the site.”

This is not the first time thieves have targeted the American diner, when in July 2014 the restaurant was broken into and two safes and office equipment were stolen, with the diner’s kitchen area also completely trashed, causing an estimated £30,000 worth of damage.
