STAFF and pupils at a Tadley primary school have been celebrating a “good” Ofsted rating after its latest inspection.

Burnham Copse Primary School, in Newchurch Road, has improved on its previous “requires improvement” rating following the two-day inspection which took place on March 9 and 10.

Inspectors found that staff and pupils are “constantly learning and are not afraid to take risks to try out new ideas”, and the lead inspector Joy Considine said school leaders have an accurate understanding of what needs to be improved at the school.

The report said: “Actions taken by school leaders and governors to improve teaching and raise pupils’ achievement have been largely successful.

“Pupils are happy and they enjoy school.

“Their behaviour is good in class and when they move around the school.

“Pupils are well prepared for the next stage of their education.

“School leaders have tackled previous underachievement effectively and pupils currently in school make good progress in reading and writing.”

In the school’s recent newsletter, headteacher Alison Armstrong wrote: “We are all very proud of the “good” Ofsted grading given to the school after the recent inspection.

“The children were an absolute credit to us all and their hard work, as well as that of all the staff, was recognised and given well deserved praise.”

Despite high praise from the inspectors, they noted there are still some areas where the primary school needs to improve before being rated as “outstanding”.

The report added: “Targets for school improvement lack focus and are difficult for leaders and governors to monitor and evaluate.

“There is no plan in place to show how the school is to develop in the longer term.

“The most able pupils do not achieve as well as they should, particularly in mathematics. Often, they are provided work that is too easy.

“Parents are not always provided with information about events and changes in school promptly.”
