A WOMAN who suffered a nasty accident in a Basingstoke store believes nothing has been done to keep other customers safe after it was issued with a poor hygiene rating.

Katherine Langham fell over in B and M Stores, in Worting Road, in December last year, tripping over some plastic packaging which she said had been left lying around.

The 51-year-old was taken to hospital where she had an X-ray to see if her knee cap had cracked, before being sent home with bruising and pain.

The mother-of-four from Brighton Hill received compensation from the company following the accident, but believes that nothing has been done to prevent other customers from tripping over.

The store, which sells a range of products including food, furniture and toys, was inspected by Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council on April 15, and issued with a one out of five rating for its hygiene, with nought being the lowest score.

Inspectors looked at various aspects of the business including the structure of the building, its cleanliness and how food is stored.

Inspectors found B and M Stores had poor food hygiene safety, poor structural compliance and there was little confidence in the management.

It has been asked to make major improvements as a result.

Mrs Langham said: “I wasn’t surprised when I saw this. One out of five isn’t good.”

The grandmother-of-three added: “Nothing seems to have changed.”

Mrs Langham fears that other customers could have an accident, adding: “I fell over some plastic packaging and went flying. I damaged both of my knees. My daughter went in there just before she had a baby and I was so scared that she would fall.”

A spokeswoman for B and M said: “Since the inspection results five weeks ago we have taken on a new senior management team in store, who have been putting a lot of work into moving the standards of the store upwards. We take health and safety seriously, recognising that this means meeting all legal requirements as well as fulfilling a social obligation.”
