AS IT HAPPENED: Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council Elections 2016

  • The Conservative party increase their majority in Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council from four to six, despite two strong gains by the Labour Party.
  • Leader of the council Cllr Clive Saunders said he was pleased that the party had held the seats they had, and gained a vital seat in Bramley and Sherfield.
  • He said: "The votes show that the people of Basingstoke are happy with what the council is doing to help take this town forward.
  • "We have increased our majority which is a great sign and the new councillors who now join the council will be valuable additions."
  • Labour gained seats in Whitchurch and Brighton Hill South as well as holding the tightly contested Brookvale and Kings Furlong ward.
  • There were no seats gained for the Liberal Democrats, UKIP or Independent candidates, but Mike Bound held the only Lib Dem contested seat in Baughurst and Tadley North.
  • The make up of the council now looks as follows:
  • Conservative - 33
  • Labour - 19
  • Liberal Democrat - 6
  • Independent Forum - 2
