PARENTS are being urged to stop using some Mamas and Papas baby car seats after Argos issued an urgent recall on its products amid safety fears.

The retailer said tests on seats had revealed that some models would not protect a child and could crack in a crash.

Argos is advising parents with any of the five products concerned to return them to their nearest store for a full refund.

It said on its website: "We have identified a potential safety concern.

"In the event of an accident the car seat shell may crack and therefore not provide the intended level of protection to the user.

"If you have purchased any of the above seats, you should immediately stop using the product and return the car seat to your local Argos store for a full refund.

"We wish to thank you for your co-operation and apologise for any inconvenience caused by this recall."

Argos confirmed five different models of baby seats are being recalled including the following:

Mamas & Papas Mercury Group 1 Black 297/7526

Mamas & Papas Mercury Group 1 Grey 411/9100

Mamas & Papas Mercury Group 1-2-3 Black 305/6037

Mamas & Papas Mercury Group 1, 2, 3 Grey 397/9530

Mamas & Papas Mercury Group 2-3 Black and Grey 245/4829

It comes as new rules are due to be introduced later this year, which will see car booster seats without a back banned for younger children.
