PLANS to build Beggarwood’s first pub have been put forward after developers Grainger PLC confirmed their intentions for a new watering hole and residential care home on Beggarwood Island.

Grainger PLC, who own the area of land between Winchester Road, Beggarwood Lane and Shortwood Copse Road, recently invited residents to put forward their ideas on what this area should be used for.

The residential property firm received more than 200 suggestions and found that a pub and supporting housing for older people came out on top.

The company are now in talks with breweries and care providers as the bidding process begins to start using the site once again.

Hatch Warren and Beggarwood Councillor Dan Putty has welcomed the proposed redevelopments.

“The island site has been lying there barren for so many years that something needed to be done with it and I am pleased it is now going to have developments on it,” Cllr Putty said.

“We want to see that this site gives our existing and incoming residents who are going to settle here, the right provisions and the best services accessible.

“The new plans will be good for the area and there should hopefully still be room to move the dental surgery on to the island and also some other elements such as take-aways and a Costa.

“I don’t know exactly what else can be put there but some other small outlets, perhaps like a hairdressing saloon.”

Residents of Beggarwood currently have to walk almost a mile and a half to the nearest pub, The Portsmouth Arms.

The plans come despite the Campaign for Real Ale releasing research showing that 29 pubs a week close across the country.

Concerns have been raised about the prospect of almost 100 new homes being built in Beggarwood after The Gazette revealed the NHS were concerned about the waiting times at the estate’s surgery.
