HUNDEDS of different varieties of potato were on show at a popular annual event held in Whitchurch.

Hampshire Potato Days was held at Testbourne Commuity School, in Micheldever Road, at the weekend and was visited by hundreds of people.

Around 1,400 people attended the event over the two days, and there were 110 varieties of potato on show.

Visitors could buy individual varieties to try, as well as gain some expert advice from Chris Bird, a lecturer at Sparsholt College, and Richard Stevenson, of Charlton Park Garden Centre, who annually tours Europe to provide the largest selection of varieties for amateur growers.

There were stalls to browse with a huge selection of vegetable seeds to buy, as well as rare and unusual varieties, along with ornamental plants.

Children could enjoy a variety of activities in the school hall.

Phil Cooper, who organised the event, said: “It’s unique in that we have the largest selection of potato varieties anywhere.

“We have been going for such a long time, we are a regular feature in the gardening calendar.”

Hampshire Potato Days, organised by Hampshire Organic Gardening Group, Friends of Whitchurch Primary School and volunteers from Whitchurch, has been running for 18 years.

Any money leftover after the event is split between each of the three groups.

Mr Cooper said this year’s event was a huge success, and has helped raise more than £30,000 for Whitchurch over the years.

He added: “It brings lots of people into Whitchurch. They go into the Silk Mill because they have a two-for-one offer, they go for coffee and to the restaurants.”
