INSPIRED by the loss of her hero, a mum-of-three has decided to take an active approach to help fight cancer.

Nina Goddard, 34, from Coppice Road, Kingsclere, has pledged to take part in the 5k Basingstoke Race for Life as a homage to the late David Bowie.

Nina, who is a self-professed couch potato, said if she raises £500 she will get her haircut into the famous Ziggy Stardust style and if she collects £1,000 she will do the run dressed as the Starman himself.

The 34 year-old told The Gazette for her to do something like this is very out of character.

She said: “All my friends and work colleagues think the whole idea is absolutely hilarious as it really isn’t me because I am almost anti-exercise.

“I went to my first boxercise class last week and it almost killed me, but it has spurred me on to get fitter.”

Nina’s love affair with David Bowie started when she was 12-years-old when she purchased her first-ever CD titled The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars.

From this point on Bowie had a big impact on the mum-of-three’s life because she grew up listening to his music.

After the news of Bowie’s death, Nina decided to do her bit for Cancer Research UK.

“I remember I was driving to work the day after the announcement of Bowie’s death and I was thinking of ways to help raise money,” added Nina.

“At work they were selling Cancer Research T-shirts and had donation buckets, but I thought to myself I wanted to do something a bit more meaningful than just getting a T-shirt.

“That’s when I made the decision to run the Race for Life, and wanted to do something very obvious so having the haircut and the lightning strip down my face will make me stand out.”

Nina will join thousands of women on June 19 to take part in the 5k run around Down Grange.
