HUNDREDS of youngsters put their trainers on for an annual event in Hartley Wintney which promotes exercise.

Around 275 children rook part in this year’s Hartley Wintney Fun Run, which took place on the playing fields at Greenfields Junior School last Sunday.

The event, which celebrated its 10th year, saw those taking part battle it out in a series of runs from 400 metres to a 2.4km course, with children from pre-school age to 18-years-old taking part.

As well as the races, activities on the day included a fastest serve tennis competition, a beat the goalie competition, face and nail painting and those attending were able to tuck into a selection of items from a barbecue.

The aim of the fun run, which is organised by a team of around 40 volunteers, is to encourage children and young people to get into running as well as raising funds for local organisations such as schools and sports clubs.

Father-of-three Andy Shaw, who is one of the main organisers, told The Gazette: “It went really well and the weather was with us which was great.

“We have had lots of great feedback from people saying what an absolutely fun day it was and people think of it as a real family event. You have mums and dads come down. It is full of smiles.”

The 46-year-old said the event raised around £2,000, with a £300 donation made to Hartley Wintney Tennis Club on the day. In addition, the 4th Bramshill Scouts raised around £400 for their trip to help impoverished people in Borneo.

Mr Shaw also thanked the other organisers – Dom Wake, Tom Marchiselli, Simon Shorey, Jo Wake and Sally Hall.
