A WEEK of events to put the spotlight on green issues and initiatives has been hailed as the biggest and best yet.

This year’s Green Week campaign, which ran from September 19 and 27, saw hundreds of people take part in events to get people to focus on the environment.

The week kicked off with a special green fair in Festival Place to find out more about local groups and the work they do and to sample vegetables from Northdown Orchard.

Other events included a green fun day at Buckskin Evangelical Church, a swishing party where people could swap their clothes and accessories at the Tea Bar, at the Top of The Town, a roof garden visit at AXA Wealth, in Winterthur Way, and a network evening for environmental groups at Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council.

Martin Heath, director of Basingstoke Energy Services Co-operative and co-founder of Basingstoke Transition Network, told The Gazette: “It went very well and there were a huge number of events and the feedback we got from the organisers is that everyone was pleased with it and eventually we are getting the message across.

“It has definitely been the best yet in terms of the breadth of the geographical coverage as we had events all around the borough in terms of the number of events and the number of people who got involved. It is interesting to see a lot more people engaged in the town centre.

“I think we still have a long way to go. I think it is letting people know that this is a sensible thing to do.”
