A GUINNESS world record will be attempted in Basingstoke for the most amount of people doing a burpee at the same time in the same place.

The attempt will take place at Basingstoke Football Club’s Soccer AM stadium in Western Way as part of a family fun day to raise money for Sudden and Unexplained Death in Childhood (SUDC) and St Michael’s Hospice, Aldermaston Road.

Nicola Akers has helped organise the event on October 18 from noon to 5pm when it is hoped that more than 400 people will spend two minutes performing burpees.

The exercise uses the full body and is performed in four steps beginning with a standing position before dropping to a squat, kicking the feet back with the arms extended, followed by returning the feet to the squat position before jumping up.

Nicola, 36, from Brighton Hill, said: “It has to be for two minutes to break the world record of 385 people.”

Organisers initially had a target of 300, as the world record was 295, but this was broken just last month.

Nicola, who appeared on the front page of The Gazette after suffering two ruptured ectopic pregnancies has been training to take part in a separate charity mission – the Thames Path Challenge – on September 12 in aid of The Ectopic Pregnancy Trust, when she will walk 31 miles for the cause, and she hopes the mission will mean she is even fitter for the burpee attempt next month.

The designer for Waitrose hopes lots of people will join her in the record attempt.

Various people have already pledged their support and the public are invited to take part on the day.

The event was the idea of Steve Dennis, who owns Fitness Flex in Basingstoke, to raise money for SUDC in support of a couple who attend his bootcamp.
