THE countdown is on for runners to enter the fifth annual Basingstoke Half Marathon.

There is less than six weeks to go to the 13.1-mile race on Sunday, October 4, and organisers are keen for people to sign up as soon as possible.

A spokesman for the event, which is being sponsored this year by Phillips Solicitors, said: “Entries are flooding in, so runners are encouraged to sign up today.

“This year there are record numbers of large charity teams, as well as impressive corporate and running club teams.”

Among the elite athletes due to take part this year is Kenyan runner Vincent Boit, who smashed the course record at the Chester Half Marathon this year, winning in 62 minutes and 21 seconds.

Tom Payn, with a personal best of 64mins and 55secs, and Alex Milne, 68mins and 37secs, will also take part.

This year Destination Basingstoke, the race organisers, will hand out commemorative wristbands to those loyal runners who taken part in every Basingstoke Half Marathon.

Runners will also be encouraged to do high fives with spectators to mark the race’s birthday.

Those taking part can prepare for the big day by attending a free seminar, organised by Reactivate Physiotherapy, at Beechdown Health Club on Tuesday, September 8.
