TWO Basingstoke mothers have bared all as part of a national campaign aimed at getting motorists to slow down for horse riders on the road.

Lisa Jackson and Janice Cavanagh rode through Cliddesden in just their underwear on Monday as part of the national #willyouslowdownformenow? campaign which has seen hundreds of riders uploading pictures of themselves in underwear with their horses.

The campaign was started by 19-year-old Lucy De Grucy from Jersey after having personal experiences of dangerous drivers when out riding her horse and the Facebook page has received over 30,000 likes.

It is hoped that by uploading the pictures to social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter, it will mean motorists are more likely to pay attention and slow down when sharing the road with horses.

Mother-of-two Lisa Jackson, of Laburnum Way, Winklebury, told The Gazette that she mainly sticks to the Cliddesden area when out riding her 23-year-old pony, Lady.

The 31-year-old added: “Sometimes you get vans going from job to job who go past and you try to move out of the way but sometimes you can’t as it is country lanes.

“Some do slow down but you get quite a few who barge past and push you on the edge but a horse has got a mind of its own. People need to pay attention to it and when they see this, it makes people pay attention.”

Lisa added: “My family think it is a good way to raise awareness of safety. My girl is five and in the future she will be on the roads so hopefully people will remember it.

“It is probably going to be a one-time thing to get the pictures out there and raise awareness. If it doesn’t work, the next stage would be to take it to London.”

Mother-of-one Janice Cavanagh, who lives in Cliddesden, has had numerous encounters with dangerous drivers and as a result, she now wears a camera on her helmet to capture footage which she then hands to the police.

While out riding, Jan has been sworn at and told that her pony, Bobby Dazzler, shouldn’t be on the road but she says that she has every right to be on the road, telling The Gazette: “I can control it but if it decides to take off there is not a lot we can do but throw ourselves off. We have to pay insurance for safety to protect ourselves and horses.”

The 47-year-old added: “I have come close to a few accidents with car drivers in the Cliddesden area. One actually touched the stirrup so it was a close shave and I wear a head cam so I catch a number of complaints.

“They come through Farleigh Hill and it is 30mph through the village and they don’t stick to 30mph and most of the time they think they can speed up.”
