AN ONLINE digital storybook documenting the history of the Atomic Weapons Establishment has been launched.

To mark over 60 years of AWE being based in Aldermaston and Burghfield, the digital storybook captures AWE’s scientific and engineering achievements and innovations, royal visits as well as local fundraising events and education projects.

The book contains stories, photographs and videos dating back from the 1950s with contributions from hundreds of employees as well as residents who live around the site.

The content also takes a look at AWE’s apprenticeship scheme and the important contribution it makes to the local community.

Mike Allaston, a former apprentice at AWE, said: “I’m delighted I’m able to share my life experiences using digital technology.

The storybook is a wonderful celebration of our local community and history.

“When I joined in September 1953 the apprentice school was an old RAF building at the back of the Falcon Pub (no longer there). We learned mechanical filing, sawing and made our own set of tools in our first year. We were then sent round to different departments to learn different skills.

“AWE looked after the apprentices really well. It was a fantastic place to work.”

Haydn Clulow, AWE’s site director, added: “The digital storybook brings our proud history to life and showcases the great contribution AWE has made to the community over the last 60 years as employers and neighbour.

“The response we have received from the storybook contributors has been fantastic and I would like to thank everyone who has submitted their stories and artefacts to help make this happen.”
