A YOUNG cancer patient got the chance to hang out on a sailing boat with a legendary rock star.

Dave Gregory, 21, from Bramley, was one of a group of young people who met Roger Daltrey, frontman of The Who.

Mr Daltrey was speaking at an event in Gosport, where he met young people who had been diagnosed with cancer and showed them around a 70ft ocean racing yacht.

The yacht is due to set off on the round the world Clipper race later this month and will be raising money for the charity.

Former Queen Mary's College student Dave, from Bramley, said: “I just didn’t know what to say to him, I am such a massive fan of The Who and Roger Daltrey, I have all his solo stuff.

“He is such a solid bloke, he actually cares about the trust and he was not talking about himself but asking about us.”

Dave (pictured above, wearing a purple hat) was diagnosed with blood cancer lymphoma in February.

He has undergone a course of chemotherapy and is due to start a course of radiotherapy.

He got the chance to meet Mr Daltrey Roger after becoming involved with the Teenage Cancer Trust, which The Who's front man is a patron of, when he was an in-patient at Southampton General Hospital.

The Who front man is a patron of the charity.

Mr Daltrey Roger said: “It’s about building a community and about raising awareness and to get enough people to realise what the charity does.

“We are hoping to get a sponsor for one of the boats and have a Teenage Cancer Trust boat in the race.”

The 71-year-old rocker, who this year headlined Glastonbury Festival’s Pyramid Stage, recently revealed that his insurance company will no longer let him perform two shows in a row as medical experts have told him he needs to so he can allow his vocal cords to recover.

Speaking about the future of the band, Mr Daltrey said: “There are only the two of us left and we are just enjoying it while it lasts.

“I think the music has stood the test of time and I really think we do it well - we do the best shows now that we have ever done.

“And I am my harshest critic, we are ruthless on ourselves.

“Whether you’re playing Glastonbury or a pub with 10 people you want to play well.

“And we are getting a lot of younger fans too.”

Vocalist Daltrey and guitarist Pete Townshend are the only two remaining original members of the four piece that has been a major influence on rock music since their formation.
