A DATABASE has been set up by a Basingstoke surgeon to gather information about osteotomy operations.

Orthopaedic surgeon Adrian Wilson hopes the information can be used to persuade other surgeons to use his techniques developed for knee surgery.

Mr Wilson has been at the forefront of osteotomies for years, and has developed several new techniques, which have revolutionised the way patients are treated for damaged knees.

As previously reported in The Gazette, Mr Wilson developed a technique which involves cutting into the shin bone and opening it to create a wedge, before realigning the leg to take the pressure off the injured area.

But he told The Gazette that there are still surgeons practising in this country, and abroad, who are only offering patients complete knee replacements.

He said collecting data from operations may “change the attitude of dinosaurs who are working in this country and the US”.

He added: “One of the biggest problems for patients is when they sit down in front of their surgeon and operations that are discussed often don’t include this operation because the surgeon isn’t aware of where it’s developed to. Part of what we are trying to do is raise awareness.”

Mr Wilson said this is “very frustrating” adding: “Lots of surgeons know about it outside the UK but not in the UK. It’s changing the mindset.”
