A HARTLEY Wintney man who started running to lose weight has embarked on a year of running challenges.

Nick Kirby, 48, is part way through an epic mission as part of a bid to raise cash for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust and Children with Cancer UK.

So far he has completed 17 organised runs, including the Brecon Midnight Marathon, the London Marathon and Fleet Half-Marathon.

He hopes to complete another eight, ending with the Portsmouth Coastal Marathon on December 20.

The 48-year-old had initially planned to just run the London Marathon, but when he didn’t get a place in the ballot he applied for a charity place – and decided not to stop there.

Nick was inspired by comedian Eddie Izzard, who ran 43 marathons in 53 days for Sport Relief in 2009, including a run through the borough, as well as being inspired by the 15-year-old son of his friends, who has cystic fibrosis (CF).

He said: “I am a bit big so I’m better suited for rugby or rowing really, but not running.

“I stopped running for many years and just did the odd half-marathon.

“About five years ago, I realised I’d become way too big and decided to do something about it, and I’ve been running ever since.”

Sam Carter, regional fundraising manager at the Cystic Fibrosis Trust, said: “Nick is showing great determination in taking on these gruelling marathons, and his willingness to keep going and raise vital funds has been a great source of inspiration to all those affected by CF.”

So far Mr Kirby has raised more than £8,000, but hopes to reach £10,000.
