THE organisers behind a proposed major festival in Popham have submitted an application to licence the event.

As previously reported by The Gazette, the One Love Festival is due to take place next to Popham Airfield from Friday, September 4 to Sunday, September 6 and has been billed as “the UK’s only dub and reggae music camping festival”.

The festival is now in its eighth year and organisers chose the new location as a larger space for the growing audience. This year’s lineup features more than 100 acts.

Now organisers have submitted a licensing application to Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council.

The application requests permission to host live and recorded music between 1pm and 2am on the Friday, between 11am and 2am on Saturday and between 11am and 11pm on Sunday.

It also wants to sell late night refreshments from 11pm to 2am on Friday and Saturday, and alcohol from 11am to 1.45am on Friday and Saturday and from 11am to 10.30pm on Sunday.

Overton Parish Council has already raised concerns with the main worry being “traffic queuing on the slip road to Popham”.

Festival founder Dan Wiltshire told The Gazette that the event has an “excellent history” and measures are always put into place to ensure homeowners are not disturbed.

He added: “We have never had a build-up of traffic in eight years and we are sensitive about congesting local roads. We have provided instructions on our tickets to avoid the local villages.

“Our festival goers want this to be successful and I know that they always comply with these requests.”

The deadline for public comments on the application is tomorrow before the council decides.
