FIRE safety, first aid and stranger danger were just some of the topics covered at an event aimed at keeping children safe.

Nearly 1,500 Year 6 children from across the borough took part in Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council’s Think Safe event, held at Bramley Training Camp over two weeks.

The pupils took part in a variety of sessions run by the police, the Safer North Hampshire Team, the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, Trading Standards officers, the fire service, British Red Cross and Sainsbury’s.

Sessions included talks on cyber safety and sea safety, and pupils also experienced live mock-ups of dangerous situations they might face in their day-to-day lives.

Councillor Cathy Osselton, the borough council’s cabinet member for partnerships, said the event gave children in the borough the opportunity to gain “valuable knowledge”.
