MURDERED police constable Fiona Bone was laid to rest in a private ceremony in the Highlands yesterday, attended only by close family and friends.

The 32-year-old, who was educated at Hopeman Primary and Lossiemouth High in Moray before her parents, Paul and June, moved to the Isle of Man, wanted to be buried where she grew up.

Her partner Claire Curran and Ms Curran's five-year-old daughter Jessie were at the graveside with her parents.

Ms Bone and Ms Curran had discussed a civil partnership the day before the Manchester-based policewoman was gunned down.

Her colleague, Nicola Hughes, 23, was also killed. The officers died together after being lured to their deaths when they responded to a reported burglary at a home in Tameside.

Dale Cregan, 29, has been charged with the murder of both policewomen, two further murders and four other attempted murders.

The quiet ceremony at Clovenside, Forres, Morayshire was in marked contrast to her funeral service at Manchester Cathedral.

Last week, thousands of police officers and members of the public lined the city's streets to pay their respects to PC Bone, just a day after doing so for PC Hughes.

Floral messages from family and friends were laid on the grave. One from Jessie, on a bouquet of lillies written in the girl's own writing on behalf of her and her mother, said : "To Fiona. We love you. We miss you."
