HUNDREDS of people across Basingstoke got the chance to have their say on the borough’s bus service at an event held by Stagecoach last week.

Bus provider Stagecoach held the consultation day last Thursday in the town centre.

Staff from the bus company, along with representatives from Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council and independent bus campaign group Bus Users, spoke to bus users about the bus network across Basingstoke and Deane.

Around 200 people filled out forms at the Top of The Town and at the entrance to The Malls, opposite Basingstoke railway station, letting transport bosses know how the services could be improved.

Some of the requests that Stagecoach received included a Sunday service for services between RAF Odiham, Hook, Old Basing and Hatch Warren, and the town centre.

Other topics brought up by customers included making fares cheaper for young people and installing bus shelters in all built up areas.

Adam Hawksworth, marketing manager at Stagecoach, told The Gazette: “We had a great turnout and it was a constant stream of conversations throughout the day, so that was fantastic.

“One of the key themes was around improvements to access around the Top of The Town and some customers were frustrated by the one way system and that was mentioned a few times.

“We also got praise from some people who were quite happy that the frequency of the Number 1 service to Brighton Hill had been approved and that evening services had been improved.”

All of the comments will now be collated.

Stagecoach customers will also be able to provide further comments in an online survey, and the comments will be used to shape the bus provider’s service across the borough.

Mr Hawksworth added: “This is part of an ongoing consultation.

We are going to repeat these events two or three times a year, every year and we might do it in areas such as Brighton Hill and Popley and get around the town, talking to customers and making sure they have a voice.”
