A STATE-OF-THE-ART research facility at a nuclear weapons firm has been completed within its projected cost and schedule.
The Phoenix facility at Atomic Weapon Establishment’s (AWE) Burghfield site manufactures non-nuclear components and the firm says it provides a precision machining capability, as well as resources for development under environmental control. It is the latest part of the site to become operational as part of AWE’s infrastructure modernisation programme and will allow staff to apply machining technology.
AWE PLC managing director Kevin Bilger said: “This is another example of AWE’s commitment to providing cuttingedge technology in support of the deterrent and at the same time, providing an exciting and innovative environment for current and future skilled engineers who are so vital to the programme.”
The firm is contracted to the Ministry of Defence and provides and maintains warheads for Trident, the UK’s nuclear programme.
