STAFF and pupils at a Basingstoke secondary school are mourning after a pupil died of a heart attack.

Everest Community Academy said that Blake Cook died on Wednesday evening after suffering problems with his diabetes, which led to a heart attack from which he did not recover.

The 15-year-old had been off school for a few days before his death because of his diabetes, and he suffered the heart attack at his home in Popley.

An ambulance was called but paramedics were unable to save the teenager.

Nick Price, principal at the school, in Oxford Way, Popley, said: “It is so sad. Our thoughts are with his family and particularly his little sister.”

He informed pupils of the news in an assembly on Thursday, and said counsellors had been helping students through the difficult time.

Mr Price paid tribute to Blake describing him as “so nice and always smiling and always making a joke of things. He was a lovely lad and everyone was so fond of him and that makes it even more of a shock.”

The principal praised pupils at the school for the way in which they had dealt with the tragedy, adding: “The kids and have been wonderful and so respectful and caring. It’s so hard.”

Blake’s friends have taken to social media to express sadness over the news of his death.

Maria posted on Twitter: “R.I.P Blake Cook you were taken far too soon. Thinking of his family and friends during such as sad time.”

Vicki Jackson wrote on Facebook: “RIP Blake, so sad, taken too soon, my thoughts are with his family and friends.”

Helen Joseph added: “Rest in peace Blake, so young to be taken. Will be missed by lots. My heart goes out to the family and his friends from Everest.”
