WORK is currently underway to install a new signposting system in Basingstoke’s town centre in a bid to make it easier for pedestrians to access key destinations.
Hampshire County Council has announced that it will be rolling out its “Wayfinding” initiative, which is popular in cities such as London and Bristol, to Basingstoke.
The aim of the scheme is to improve connectivity between Basingstoke train station and key attractions in the town centre, using totem-style maps to display destination areas and tourist attractions.
It also encourages tourists to visit all of the town centre, increasing footfall to these areas and boosting local businesses.
The scheme is funded by the Department for Transport’s Local Sustainable Transport Fund alongside the county council’s Transport Plan.
Councillor Seán Woodward, executive member for economy, transport and environment at Hampshire County Council, said: “The Wayfinding project will provide good quality, modern signage linking destinations and making it easier for people to find their way around the area.
“Visitors will be encouraged to explore the town centres and discover more of the attractions the local area has to offer therefore helping to boost the local economy by increasing footfall for businesses.”
