VOLUNTEERS are being sought to help maintain standards of fairness, decency and care at Winchester Prison.

Its Independent Monitoring Board, which ensures inmates are treated fairly, is seeking new members willing to spend a few days a month at the Category B men’s facility in Romsey Road.

Although the board is appointed by the government, members are given independent status to be the eyes and ears of ministers as they watch day-to-day life inside.

No specific qualifications or experience are required, although applicants need to be enthusiastic, open-minded, possess good communication skills and have the ability to exercise sound, objective judgement.

They should also live within 20 miles of the prison.

IMB Winchester chairman John Tainton said: “We are looking for volunteers willing to provide three or four days a month to visit the prison on a rota basis, listening and talking to prisoners and staff and being familiar with all that happens ‘inside’.

“The role is interesting, educational and challenging, and board members can make a real difference.

“This is volunteering that’s different, unique and unlike any other.”

The deadline for applications is March 1.
