IT’S a much-loved film with the iconic Whitney Houston as its leading lady.

So could a musical version of The Bodyguard fronted by a former X Factor winner possibly replicate its magic?

The answer, judging from last night’s standing ovation at The Mayflower Theatre, in Southampton, is a resounding ‘yes’.

The show began literally with a bang, and the high energy and electric atmosphere continued throughout the performance.

Alexandra Burke was magnificent as Rachel Marron, the superstar and mother who is being targeted by a deranged and dangerous fan.

Basingstoke Gazette:

It came as no surprise that her vocal ability was breathtaking, but her talents as an actress were truly impressive.

She brought real passion and humanity to the role, particularly when on stage with Xhanti Mbonzongwana , who was almost unbearably cute in the role of her son Fletcher .

The young actor, who is making his professional theatre debut in The Bodyguard, also deserves praise for his impressive body-popping, which had the audience cheering.

Frank Farmer, the tortured bodyguard who tries not to fall in love with his client, was excellently played by Stuart Reid.

The actor managed to not only convey a troubled past, but to lend some humour to the show – watch out for his star turn on the karaoke machine.

Another standout performance came from Melissa James, who played Rachel’s younger sister Nicki Marron and, though he barely said a word, Mike Denman was truly terrifying as the psychopathic stalker who had Rachel in his sights.

Stunning sets, pyrotechnics and costumes combined lent the show a cinematic feel.

Even a power failure, which affected the theatre and surrounding properties, did not dampen the drama of the show, or the audience’s enthusiasm for it.

The show was a perfect vehicle for a procession of fabulous sing-along Whitney Houston hits, including I Have Nothing, Saving All My Love, So Emotional and the final, spine tingling rendition of I Will Always Love You, which brought the crowd to its feet.

The rapturous standing ovation was thoroughly deserved, and certainly won’t be the last for this incredible show and the phenomenal cast.

The show runs in Southampton until February 28.
