FIVE mums, who share a passion for running, will pile on the miles to pull in the pounds as they take part in a demanding charity challenge.

The Basingstoke women all have children who play football for Hatch Warren Phoenix FC Under 8s Flames & Blaze team, and they have teamed up to form Team Phoenix.

The group will take on the Brutal 10 contest this month – a 10km run in Long Valley, which will cover hills, rivers and lots of mud.

Karen Bull, 38, will take on the challenge along with Hannah Milton, Jo Jupp, Sarah Shepherd and Louise Hartgill.

The ladies, who have 10 children between them, are raising money for CLIC Sargent, a cancer charity, having been inspired by the plight of 12-year-old Hannah Murrey, whose father used to be involved in the running of the football club.

The youngster has a rare type of bone cancer, called osteosarcoma, and a fund has been set up in her name to raise money for CLIC Sargent.

To date, Hannah has raised more than £1,100 for the charity, and Team Phoenix are hoping to boost those funds to the tune of £500, through the challenge.

Karen said: “We are all keen runners, some more than others, but we are well prepared. It seemed very appropriate to choose to run for CLIC Sargent and it is a great charity. Everyone has been very generous so far.”
