YOUNG people supported by a charity project visited a theme park to celebrate their achievements.

The Celebrating Young People’s Achievements event was organised by children’s charity Barnardo’s with the help of the charity’s PHASE 2 project, which works with young people aged 16 to 18 in the Basingstoke area who are NEET (Not in Education, Employment or Training).

The youngsters joined charity staff and television presenter Ivan Berry at the celebratory event at Thorpe Park.

It provided an opportunity for the young people to look back and talk about their achievements, take part in various activities, including rap, graffiti art and campaigning workshops, as well as find out more about how they can influence Barnardo’s work and meet other young people.

Josh Thomas, 18, from PHASE 2, who helped to organise the event, said: “Barnardo’s has done so much for me – helping me get a job and live independently – and with their help I’m making the very most of life.

“I really enjoyed helping to plan the recognition event. It’s good for young people to have a voice and I hope my presentation about my experience has helped inspire other young people to make the most of their opportunities with the charity.”

The event concluded with a question time, where the young people could quiz a panel of Barnardo’s directors, campaign heads and key regional staff before enjoying the rides at the park.

PHASE 2 has been financed by the European Social Fund and seeks to engage and support young people by tailoring a specific support package for each student referred.

The packages aim to reduce the risk of short or long term disengagement by helping young people fulfil their potential.
