A BASINGSTOKE club, which helps disabled people across the borough to come together and socialise, has found the perfect partner.

The May Club, which meets every week at The Vyne Community School, in Vyne Road, Basingstoke, has merged with Basingstoke Mencap after being run by a group of volunteers for 47 years.

And over 80 members of the group marked the occasion with a celebration get-together.

The club was first formed in 1967 by Peggy Allen and Dave Walls and over the years the pair have worked hard to give disabled people the same social opportunities as others.

Other people in attendance at the celebration were club patron Lady Colman and Brian Gurden, Hampshire county councillor for Basingstoke South East.

Basingstoke Mencap chairman Bill Scott said: “We appreciate everything that the May Club and its voluntary trustees have done and will continue to run the club in the same way because it works so well.”

The May Club meets every Monday between 7pm and 9pm at The Vyne Community School. The club is open for anyone with a learning disability over the age of 18. Activities available at the club include arts and crafts and discos.

If you are interested in attending or would like to volunteer at the club call the Basingstoke Mencap office on 01256 423886 or email office@basingstokemencap.org.uk
