A PLANE has crashed in woodland near Popham Airfield.

The light aircraft came down in woodland by the airfield and the A303, at around 3.30pm this afternoon, South Central Ambulance Service said.

It has directed an air ambulance to the scene, as well as three ambulance crews, three officers and its Hazardous Area Response Team to the crash.

At least one fire crew from Basingstoke fire station is said to be at the scene.

Julie Cobbe, who was travelling by car on the A303, stopped at the Little Chef restaurant near Popham Airfield at around 4.15pm.

She told The Gazette: “There were around six or seven ambulances and the same number of fire trucks and police cars.

“There were police outside, directing traffic and ambulances were coming and going.

“All I was able to find out was that some form of aircraft had come down in woodland near the Little Chef and that’s where all the crews were running to.”
