A MAN sustained "severe burns" after a fire in a camper van on a Basingstoke industrial estate last night.

Firefighters were called to Houndmills Road, Houndmills, at 6.30pm last night, after workers at the nearby Sainsbury’s depot spotted the fire.

A man, who had been cooking inside the van at the time, was treated at the scene by paramedics before being taken to Basingstoke hospital. He was later transferred to a specialist burns unit at Salisbury District Hospital.

Michelle Ullett, communications manager for South Central Ambulance Service, said the man had “severe burns to his head and hands”.

Firefighters spent 90 minutes at the scene. The cause of the fire was said to be a problem with the camper van’s gas supply.
