PLOT holders in Hook have received some welcome relief – thanks to a £10,000 grant which will fund a compostable loo.

The Hook Allotment Association, which runs the site in Reading Road, secured the grant from the Big Lottery fund, and the money will also pay for a storage shed.

The site, which opened in March 2011, has not had a toilet before, and members have had to plan their trips accordingly, sometimes returning home to use the toilet.

The group also received a grant from Hart District Council so that maintenance of the toilet can be funded for at least a year.

Sue Hinton, one of the fundraisers, said: “We were very pleased to not only receive the lottery grant but also to be awarded the Have Your Say grant.

“None of us have had any experience of compostable loos so it’s great to have some funding to help us learn to maintain it properly.”

The toilet works by flushing it with wood shavings rather than water, every time it is used. With no running water, sanitising gel will be used to keep hands clean.
