ILLUSTRATIONS passed down in the will of a Bramley resident were on show during the filming of Flog It! – but they weren’t for sale.

The collection was brought along by Paul Kelly, from Southampton, who was shocked when he discovered he was the main beneficiary of the will of Bramley resident John Davis, who was killed in a car crash in 2002.

John, who lived in Lime Tree Cottage, had created a series of paintings that were used in a book to commemorate the 10-year anniversary of English rock band, The Who.

A friend of John’s knew lead singer Roger Daltrey, and after he saw John’s work at an exhibition, he approached him to create some illustrations for the book – A Decade of The Who.

Father-of-three Paul first met John at a Roman history society that the pair were members of, and they became friends.

Following John’s death, aged 56, the whole collection of original illustrations was left to Paul, and he has now created his own business – Whofreak Artwork.

The 51-year-old takes the memorabilia, along with items such as imitation scooters and a signed parker coat from the cult classic Quadrophenia, to events around the UK. The Who’s 1973 Quadrophenia album provided the soundtrack to the film.

But Paul was not at Flog It! to auction off his treasured items. The illustration collection was valued at £500,000 in 2008 and Paul is currently in discussions with The Who’s official merchandising company, Bandmerch, who are looking to create limited edition versions of the illustrations.

Paul told The Gazette: “John was a local lad. I got in touch with the researchers, and said that I could come along.

“He was such a good friend for everything he did for me. I am keeping him in my heart and the picture of him is on the sideboard every day. I have kept John’s name alive.”
