A COMPANY based in Hook was thought to have been one of those targeted by hackers who are hosting hundreds of live feeds of footage from CCTV cameras, webcams and even baby monitors in the UK.

The Russian website has footage from the Hook area, with the postcode linking the live feed to the Virgin Media offices in Bartley Way.

One camera in Hook also shows a bedroom inside someone’s home.

However, Virgin Media has told The Gazette that the camera is not on their premises, and that the longitude links provided actually come from Wales.

The site lists streams from more than 250 countries, including 584 feeds from the UK, and is broadcasting footage from systems using either default passwords or no log-in codes at all.

Footage includes inside homes, offices, driveways, car parks, salons, gyms and shops.

Privacy watchdogs are urging people to upgrade their passwords and turn off remote access on equipment if it is not needed.

UK Information Commissioner Christopher Graham told BBC Breakfast: “It’s got more than 500 UK webcams where there is a facility for remote access to check what’s going on in a shop, what’s going on at home, how’s the baby.”

He is planning to work with the Russian authorities to have the website shut down, and said this type of site would be illegal in the UK.

The site claims to be trying to alert people to the security breach.

The name of the site has been provided to the media, however The Gazette has decided not to publish it.
