IT COULD be third time lucky for supermarket giant Tesco after they submitted a fresh planning application to develop a site in Brighton Hill.

As previously reported by The Gazette, the supermarket announced plans for a revised proposal to develop the former Smiths Industries site, on The Harrow Way, Basingstoke.

In July 2012, the company was refused planning permission to build a 63,000sq ft store at the site and an appeal against the rejection by Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council was also dismissed last year by the Government’s planning inspectorate following a seven-day planning inquiry held in February.

The Government planning inspector dismissed the appeal because of the impact on nearby shops at the Brighton Hill District Centre.

And the company will be hoping that it is third time lucky after they submitted the new application, which will see a smaller shopping centre, over 300 car parking spaces and 48 one, two and three-bedroom homes.

The scheme is also set to create 200 new part-time and full-time jobs.

The application says: “The smaller store which is now being sought would have a reduced impact on the vitality and viability of the Brighton Hill District Centre than that which was refused under the previous application.

“The reduced store size also has an effect on the traffic impact of the proposed development, generating less traffic movements than the store which was applied for previously.

“Despite this reduced impact, the same suite of highway improvements is being proposed in conjunction with this development as that which was proposed, and considered acceptable by both Hampshire County Council and the Planning Inspector, under the previous application.”
